so, after two false starts (10 hour drive during imbb: rice; vegetarian before, during, and after imbb: fish) since i first decided to participate, i've actually managed it this time.

the topic is grilling, and i've been agonizing over it. well, not really. i knew right away that i wanted to grill some radicchio, i just couldn't get much farther than that. there was a scheme for a while to do grilled figs, then stuff them with chevre and wrap them into packets made from blanched radicchio leaves, then grill the packets...but i got all down in the mouth about it because i just wasn't seeing any nice radicchio anywhere. and then i stopped seeing figs, too! i had plenty of other ideas, but nothing very interesting, and i gave up the middle of last week and decided i wasn't going to do it at all.

we went out to breakfast on the other side of town this morning and decided to go grocery shopping despite not really knowing what we needed right afterwards - and i immediately saw beautiful huge fresh heads of radicchio and remembered that today was the day. but it's the weekend, and i already had projects going, and i was feeling unprepared...i took a little convincing, but after a few minutes glowering to myself in the middle of the produce section, i decided to recreate and reinterpret a sandwich that was, for the short time it was available, my favorite. a grilled radicchio, grilled asparagus concoction that zingerman's offered briefly, then changed to a fairly bland asparagus & spinach thing. maybe radicchio isn't for everyone? it's a marvel grilled, i could live on it (well, that and one or two other things). a look at the asparagus that was available convinced me i had to make a change as well - it was well past its prime, and $5/pound. i just couldn't do it. but we'd been to the farm market yesterday, and still had some very nice green beans - i figured they'd do, in a pinch.

so here we go: mostly under here )

do i even need to mention that the sun came out as soon as i took the last thing off the grill and went inside?
